ATF will no longer enforce NFA prior-approval, registration, or tax-stamp rules for short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, and certain “any other weapons.”
This follows Congress eliminating the making/transfer taxes in the One Big Beautiful Bill and DOJ’s decision not to appeal the Northern District of Texas ruling. Enforcement discretion applies nationwide—not only to the case plaintiffs.
Still fully regulated under the NFA (including the $200 tax): machine guns and destructive devices.
The guidance does not supersede WA state and local laws that restrict NFA firearms. Dealers must continue Form 4473s, NICS checks, and GCA record-keeping. Interstate transport of SBRs/SBSs still needs a Form 20.
